lyrics

In The Bleak Midwinter
-text by Christina Rossetti, 1872 / music by Gustav Holst, 1906
*new verse by Ryan Sheeler, 2015

VERSE 1
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen softly, snow on snow
in the bleak midwinter, oh so long ago.

VERSE 2
Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
for the Lord Almighty, Jesus Christ.

VERSE 3*
Looking down from heaven, I wonder what He sees?
is it all the loss and longing, in the hearts of you and me?
We search the whole world over, for long-forgotten bliss
and never find another gift as pure as His

VERSE 4
And so, what can I give him, woeful as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: I will give my heart.
